Viand Coffee Shop

If you are ever in the neighborhood of Madison and 60th, and need a quick bite, check out Viand Coffee Shop.   A true New York experience.

Our orthodontist is in the neighborhood.  We have taken things out but never had the luxury of sitting there.  Yesterday our luck was with us.  There are only about 8-10 booths down the side left wall that each only fit 2 people per booth.  Then the large counter.  We had 4 and there were 4 seats available at the counter, next to each other.  Luck.

The guy running the place writes nothing down.  He literally shouts out the orders, in their own personal language "whiskey with turkey melted sweet cheese" and in moments your meal appears.  The food is good and the service is awesome.  We were in an out in less than 1/2 an hour.  The fresh turkey and the burgers were really top!

I might have to make it a 6-8 week outing, like the orthodontist.

I enjoyed that place until about 4 years ago when I got an E coli bacterial infection from one of their burgers. I ended up at Lenox Hill hospital. Word to the wise, if you feel you must get a burger there, well done is the only way to go.

Glad to hear it’s still going strong. I worked two xmas seasons as a temp at Sherry-Lehmann, next door to Viand in ’85 and ’86. I still remember the fresh turkey sandwiches with russian dressing I would have for nearly every lunch. And sometimes dinner.

Try their rice pudding, too. I think their fresh turkey sandwich is the best around. I’ve been going there for years…
