The Tripel, Playa Del Rey

bartripelI was out in LA for a few days and went to The Tripel for dinner.  A very cool bar with food.  The wine and beer options are huge which is always an added bonus.  My brother and sister-in-law had been there the week before for brunch.  My brother was still talking about their brunch when we got there.  So brunch was good, dinner not so much but I based on brunch perhaps dinner was just an off-night.  The menu reads great.  This area is probably the next frontier in this area of LA but the noise from the airport will always keep it a little gritty and cool which is a good thing.

calamariWe split everything.  There was 3 of us.  Grilled calamari with peaches, avocado, romaine, watercress and a sweet & spicy chili vinaigrette.  Ridiculously heavy handed.

watermelonWatermelon chunks served with a strawberry fluff, olives, cucumbers, feta cheese, sliced radishes and a oregano-black pepper vinaigrette.

calamariWhite corn off the cob with heirloom tomatoes, pea tendrils, pickled red onions and celery salted popcorn.  I am a popcorn lover so thought the presentation was nice.

blackpastaLove squid ink spaghetti and this was served with ground shrimp, lemon, chili oil, herbs and botarga.  Meh.

steakMarinated skirt steak wit balsamic onion rings and spicy greens.  I am a sucker for onion rings.  I wish that they had more of a balsamic taste to them.

lambburgerLamb burger was well done and honestly did not really have a heavy lamb taste.  April Bloomfeld’s lamb burger at the Breslin.  This had a toasted seeded bun, honey yogurt harissa sauce, cucumber salad and shaved red onion.

tatersSweet potato tots on the side with a horseradish honey mustard and spiced aioli.  A bit too much like a tater-tot.

As I said, I will go back when I spend a longer time in LA.

We need more LA inspired food in NY.There is something so thrown together, so fresh produced base, so overtly casual that I seriously miss here.

Agreed, even if in this case, the food was subpar.

I keep thinking about this comment, realizing how so much of the time what I really want is super casual, fresh produce based food, stuff that I would throw together at home. Perfectly articulated.
