New Labs in the Navy Yards

newlabI went to visit New Labs in the Navy Yards.  The grand opening party was over the weekend.  What an incredible addition to Brooklyns landscape.

David Belt had this seed of an idea years ago.  I was walking through there in 2012 just when the conversations began.  He has done other things like this across the globe and based on how amazing this is I would love to see others.

The place was built to create a community for people who are building companies that overlap between design, manufacturing and hardware.  There are companies doing robotics, 3d printing, materials for the armed forces and furniture.  They have curated the lucky ones that get to rent out space and many are already collaborating.  The model works.

They also brought in Chef’s Club for food so they can also create and use that location for new ideas.

They will bring in partners from large companies to work with the start-ups of this space today.  Putting this in the epicenter of the Navy yard where shipbuilding used to reign supreme aligns with history.

You can’t just stroll in there but if you can figure a way to get over to the Navy Yards when they open it to the public…do it.  It is pretty awesome.

They are home to one of the oldest colonies of feral cats in the country as well. Basically as soon as they starting making sale cloths there, the rats decimated them.In come the cats who have been there ever since.Cat lover here obviously.
