Perfect on Paper by Maria Murnane
Maria is a reader of this blog and she wrote the book Perfect on Paper. Her father ( a true supportive parent ) sent me her book after I Maria reached out to me to see if I'd be interested in reading her book. Love that. Maria published her book independently. I know that there are so many people out there doing the same thing, my father happens to be one of them. Not only has he published his own books, he publishes other people's books for them.
So I moved Perfect on Paper up to the top of my list and just finished it today. It is a great chick book. A tale of a woman, in sports PR, who is engaged to someone and he calls off the engagement 2 weeks prior to the wedding. That is when life really unfolds. Who am I? Do I really like this job? Am I going to be single for ever? Thank god for my 2 best girlfriends. Let's toast to that. Should I start my own business? How did I end up here after a year? Relationship with her father, not so good. As Maria says, "I wrote this book for any woman who has ever had a really bad date or
realized halfway through the work day that her skirt is on backwards".
Bottom line, I am generally not a lover of the campy chick flick type of books but honestly, I really liked this book. Well written. Incredibly engaging. Clever. There is something about the main character, Waverly Bryson that every woman can relate to. BTW, every review on Amazon is basically a huge thumbs up.
Little did I know that Perfect on Paper was named a finalist in chick lit for the 2009 National Indie Excellent Awards until after reading the book. So, I guess I am on the right track about the book.
Bottom line….fun, light and a great page turner. Congrats to Maria for doing it on her own without a publisher. We will probably seeing more from Maria and other people who take matters into their own hands with their books. Bravo.
