a staycation

We left Utah due to slush and mud.  Instead of returning to the grind we committed to a staycation.  Such a great week.  The next couple of days will be about what we did on our staycation.  It is as we are traveling to another city but we happen to live in it.

Started the day out with a movie.  We saw The Kid With A Bike, a French film.  Glad they still make films like this.  Just a slice of life film about a young boy who has fallen in between the cracks after being abandoned by his father at an orphanage for a month.  A woman comes to the rescue and helps him get back on his feet by actually caring about his well being.  We liked it.  We had seen Hunger Games a few days earlier in Utah and it took me about two days to get over how disturbing that film was.  Post coming.

Northernspy
On our first day we went to have lunch at Northern Spy.  I have wanted to get there since it opened.  A late lunch was perfect because we were the only people in the restaurant.  Super cute homey spot that looks like a country urban restaurant.  They did a great job and the food is really good.

Bloodorangesoda
We began with one of their housemade seltzers.  This is with blood orange.  Delicious and refreshing.

Mushroomcheesesandwich
Fred went for the mushroom cheese pressed sandwich.  Excellent.  Buttery mushrooms mixed with an oozing cheese that just has the perfect bite.

Kalesaladandeggs
I went with the kale salad.  Chopped fresh kale with tiny pieces of cheddar cheese, roasted squash, sliced almonds and pecorino. Quite good and if you need some protein you can get the two eggs on top.

Cinnamonrollcake
Had to have dessert.  Afer all, we are on vacation.  Cinnamon bun cake.  Can't really beat that.

That evening we had an amazing meal at 15 East..one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in town.

Nice start to our staycation.

Exploring NYC is a lifelong pursuit. And a pleasurable one.Discovered BOE, women-owned winery in Williamsburg yesterday. Great story. Alie is tech smart (and educated), fell in love with Brooklyn and wine and just did it. Lovely Viognier BTW.http://awaldstein.tumblr.co
