City of Gold
Jonathan Gold is a LA food critic. City of Gold is a documentary that draws us into his food world. This movie is essentially a love letter to Los Angeles cuisine and culture.
Gold shows us the importance of critical writing. He goes deep to understand the cultures behind the cuisine. He finds such joy in the history of each culture, the people he meets and the food that he eats. LA is a serious melting pot with restaurants in strip malls throughout the city. His knowledge of so many of them is mind boggling. If he writes about one it changes the game for those family run restaurants which is what most of them are.
I walked out of the restaurant thinking about cancelling every meeting for the next two weeks and just driving all over LA and eating in as many as possible. Fred and I now drive around and point out all those random spots and wonder…how do you think that bakery really is? Do you think they have great Cuban food? How do you think that avocado bacon burger tastes?
City of Gold celebrates cuisine but more than anything it celebrates culture. Just loved it!

Jonathan Gold’s review lead us to try a Vietnamese restaurant in Anaheim… yep, in a strip mall. It was excellent!
