Phone Addictions

Not sure why but in the last week there have been a slew of articles around phone addiction. It is a real thing. The constant feed of information from friends to photos to media. Someone told me about their kid who plays video games, texts and watches something else all at the same time. I can see how that would make one wonder about how a brain is developing differently.

I was FaceTiming with someone in college this week and they were looking at me while we were talking but texting at the same time on the computer. I was aghast. Yet I see so many kids talking to each other in person while literally in mid-sentence going to their phone. They have a hard time being present in the moment. Should we be teaching phone and relationship etiquette in fifth and sixth grade like we used to each home economics?

I see people and am with people where sometimes I hear myself saying to myself “get off your god damn phone”. Then I find that I am doing the same thing. It just isn’t pretty. At the end of the day, looking at someone in the eye and having a real conversation far exceeds anything that can happen on your phone. It is something we can all work on.
