Happy 4th of July

Relax with friends and family, eat good food, see some fireworks and just enjoy the day.

There is plenty wrong with America these days but the reality is we live in an incredible place that allows us freedom and the ability to dream big. It is absolutely harder for some than others but America is still the land of opportunity. It is the foundation of our Constitution.

I am going to ignore the insane military roll-out happening this evening in DC and believe that this too will pass. At least I hope so.

.The military’s role and the recognition of that role is an appropriate element of the celebration of Independence Day.The Declaration of Independence was the finest utterance of its kind ever made in history, but it was just words on paper unless the Colonies marshaled the requisite military might to defeat the King and his most-powerful-in-the-world army and navy.The Declaration of Independence transformed what was viewed by the English King as a “rebellion” into a fight to the death.The men who signed the Declaration of Independence pledged their fortunes, but the Continental Army, its leaders, and its Commander-in-Chief pledged their lives. The American Revolution lasted from 1775 until 1783. It was a long hard fight and the American military was in it to win it every second of every year.We are a free people today because men throughout history have dropped their plows and picked up their muskets to ensure that the promise of the Declaration of Independence is always a reality, that the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness is underwritten by the point of a bloody bayonet.We did not “receive” our independence; we fought for and won our independence.Who did that fighting and winning? The American military — the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.Today, take a second to reflect the cost of our independence and to recognize the vital role that our military has played in delivering our freedom and the promise of the Declaration of Independence as well as the high price our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines have paid.Damn right today is appropriately about the military.JLMwww.themusingsofthebigredca…
