Chanel Miller is an insanely strong woman. Her memoir came out this past week and I can’t put it down. It is raw, powerful and a rare glimpse into the a victim’s suffering. Nobody every concerns themself with the victim, it is all about the person who committed the crime.
If you don’t know who Chanel Miller is, that is because she was a Jane Doe, a victim of an absolutely horrific rape by Brock Turner, a Stanford student, who left her behind a dumpster and only received a ridiculously lenient sentence for his crime.
She chose to come out from behind the shadows and make her name and her story known. We ignore those who have survived sexual assaults as they shrink from the public eye and themselves. I hope Miller’s strength and courage to write this book will give the power to others to face their perpetrators.
Nobody ever deserves to be raped and Chanel has brought that conversation into the public. Women must continue to speak up, speak loudly and push for change particularly in the case of rape.
