Upside Pizza

At one point of my life I ate a lot of pizza. I had a boyfriend who basically ate an entire pepperoni pizza every day for years. Maybe he still does. At this point of my life if I am going to eat pizza it better be damn good.

I went to Upside Pizza, a new spot located at 598 8th Avenue. It is an old school pizza joint where you buy a slice (or two) of what has just come out of the oven or wait for your fave to appear. Slices aren’t $1 like the old days but the vibe is similar to the old New York $1 slice shop. The difference is not only the price but the pizza is exceptional.

Fresh mozzarella made on the premises.

The dough is the brainchild of Noam Grossman. He takes it seriously. The deep dish dough is light and airy inside and crusty on the outside. It is like no other deep dish I have had. The pie resembles a bubbling cheesy lasagna when it comes out of the oven.

I also love the names like Pepperoni Papi and Upside Don.

I went for a tasting and each bite was worthy. I mean if you are going to have pizza there is nothing like going to a place run by someone is obsessed with the perfect pie.

Upside is a baker making the perfect pie. The dough is epic. His starter has been around for four years and continues to bubble up downstairs.

Look for more Upsides in New York Cities future. We should all be so lucky to have an Upside in your neighborhood.

I was surprised to find out that at the local Whole Foods they will sell you the dough that they use for the pizza they make in the store. I just asked one day and the person answered matter of fact. They don’t market this at all. When I eat pizza I can only eat a small amount. And I always blot any oil off the top. Pepperoni – I haven’t been able to eat that since college.

Curious on your take on Emily. Finally made it there and didn’t quite get all excitement about the pie. Was kind of meh.

https://uploads.disquscdn.c…Good call. Went there yesterday after reading your post since it’s near my office. Plain slice reminded me of Patsy’s thin crust up in Harlem – sweet and crisp. Mushroom and cheese was very tasty – light crust and tangy cheese. Cheers!

What’s the deal with the curled pepperoni pieces vs. flat? We were just in NYC and were all over Joe’s Pizza and Prince St. Pizza (SOHO). Both were excellent.
