The Liberty

When our kids were young, we had Liberty season tickets. There were not many of us at the games. We sat on the floor, and the community was filled with partners, wives, and children—few men.
The games were so fun. The community was very cool. It was the beginning of women’s professional basketball at another level. Becky Hammon was playing for the Liberty then.
Fast forward, these female athletes, who have never been financially compensated for being the talent of a brand new sports industry, have become serious ballers. The championship series of the Liberty at Barclays Center is filled to capacity with 18,000 attendees, vs. a few hundred when we were attending these games back in 2000.
The games we are watching today vs the games our family watched and cheered for is a whole other game. These women have proven if they got game the arena will fill, and boy do they have game. They are bringing in the eyeballs, the fans, the sponsors, the brands and most important elevating womens basketball to an entire other level that competes head to head with the NBA who have taken all those available brand ambassador athletes and spread the love to the WNBA players.
Times are changing. After 28 years, they have won their first championship. I have never seen an arena in NY get as emotional as it did last night. Let’s go, Liberty!
