Art at Gotham
I could go out into the art world and buy something every day. I have always been drawn to young artists in any medium. Our apartment looks like an art gallery, as each wall has something on it, including random sculptures. I love a good bookshelf, too.
At Gotham, we talked about how we integrate art into our store from day one. Rachel Berks, our Creative Merchandising VP, lead the charge, and we have had some incredible shows, and have many more to come.
At our Bowery store, 3E3rd Street, the Mezzanine is where we install a new monthly installation. In Chelsea, 19th and 10th Avenue, where we will open another Gotham in early February, we will have a room committed to art.
In the art world, like luxury brands, there is a lot of uncertainty about prices and what collectors want. Artists have taken charge of their social media, which has changed the market. Art shows all look the same to me; something new rarely draws me in. Galleries raising the prices of up-and-coming artists too quickly does not help the long-term growth of the artists.
I met an artist, Bryan Fernandez, at the Shed’s Open Call, a call to NYC-based early-career artists. I found him on Instagram, reached out, bought a piece, and engaged him to have a show at Gotham. Bryan curated the show that we opened last week. It is a fantastic show of young artists with few places to show their work.
Last month, we had a show of gorgeous hand-crafted bongs from Weed’d X Solomostry from Milan that you can still buy in the store.
We also have a few pieces from Eve Fowler at Domino Park. These sayings are also on long-sleeved t-shirts.
