Every Urban Area Deserves Parks Like This

On Tuesday, September 9th, the Public Housing Community Fund, NYCHA, Patterson Houses Resident Association, Center for Justice InnovationDesign Trust for Public Space and Hoopbus will unveil significant green space improvements at Patterson Houses in the Bronx.

The $500,000 project includes two brand-new playgrounds, an accessible adult fitness zone, and a fully renovated basketball court—upgraded with resurfacing, new backboards and nets, and bold asphalt art led by Hoopbus. These improvements are part of the Fund’s $3.2 million Green Space Connections initiative, supported by the Helmsley Charitable Trust, which is transforming open spaces across four NYCHA developments to benefit more than 14,000 residents.

Residents played a leading role in shaping these upgrades, ensuring the new spaces reflect the community’s vision for intergenerational, inclusive, and vibrant places to gather, play, and stay active. The aerial photo of the revitalized basketball court and playground says it all: this is resident-led design in action.

This summer, Green Space Connections celebrated NYCHA’s first dog park and a picnic area at Castle Hill Houses, and later this fall, we will break ground on green space improvements at Roosevelt and Marlboro Houses.
