Kara Walker at the Domino Sugar Factory
If you are going to be in NYC or live in the area get over to the Domino Sugar Factory and see the Kara Walker installation that was commissioned by Creative Time. If just being in the old Domino Sugar Factory wasn’t enough you get to see sculptures made out of sugar.
The largest piece is 75 feet in length.
It is a homage to the workers (mostly slaves) who made sweets in the kitchens of the new settlers to the US.
There are a variety of these smaller pieces around the room each dripping at the bottom like oozing molasses.
Inside each of the baskets are pieces of broken sugar.
The most amazing of course if the large piece and here is a shot from the backside. You can see how she built this piece with wire and then somehow got sugar on top of it that hardened into this structure.
It is not permanent so the time to see it is now. So glad we went. There is something unique about the sweetness of the statues vs the sourness of what they stand for including many who are probably very upset about the condos that will eventually take over the Domino Sugar Factory.

thanks for letting us know about this- i am going to make it a point to get over there.
you must go. it is quite amazing.nice bumping in to you yesterday.
you too- Summer and I were rushing that day.
What I find most remarkable is how the artist was able to instill an air of defiance and pride into the woman despite her having been subjected to something as low as slavery. This statue is a good reflection on human character, I find. It’s also a clever way to ‘dispose’ of several tons of refined sugar! 🙂
agree. she is quite the artist.
Great find…
